I can surmise with great reason that every New York Giant fan, around 2:45 pm, each simultaneously thought about how they would mutilate their Saquon Barkley jersey upon arriving home from work. As I write this, at approximately six o’clock at night, I’m sure a few of them have, but maybe you have thought better of it by now. You got some food in your stomach, sat in traffic or on the train like me listening to sports radio and you’ve come to terms with the fact that Saquon Barkley is now a Philadelphia Eagle.

It comes as a shock to most but the writing seemed to be on the wall for Joe Shcoen and the Giants. Big Blue was content with letting Barkley test what his worth would be, and so he did, however my speculation as to where the disconnect could’ve stemmed from between the Giants front office and Saquon, lies in the Giants current assessment of him. The Giants aren’t in a position to “win now” as other teams , like the eagles are, and therefore don’t value Saquon as much in this moment in time as others might. In a year where the Giants are seemingly shifting, with indications a quarterback may be in play for this upcoming draft and a plethora of changes, it’s the right move to not overpay at the running back position right now. It wasn’t personal, but it now seems Saquon has made it so.
He’s going scorched earth folks.
I really do feel for the Giants fans out there having to watch this because the Jets just let Bryce Huff reach free agency and get a deal, also from the Eagles following a similar situation where the Jets really couldn’t give him what he was worth. It does suck a bit more that the Giants now have to face Saquon at minimum twice a year for the foreseeable future.
There have been mumblings in the aftermath of the Saquon signing that offer a silver lining to you Giants Fans on an otherwise dreary day. Elite edge rusher of the Carolina Panthers, Brian Burns is currently at the center of trade discussions with mutual interest from both sides per SNY’s Connor Hughes. It would ultimately cost significant draft capital and an eventual contact negotiation, being Burns is currently franchise tagged, but this would give the Giants defensive front a chance to stand toe to toe with anyone in the league with Thibbadeux and Lawrence coming off great seasons.
Lick your wounds and maybe burn some jerseys to clear your head Giants fans, but Free agency is here and there is plenty left to transpire so stay tuned.
